Key Facts

A senior adviser to Bangladesh's Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was detained for over two hours at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday evening, triggering a diplomatic row between the two nations.

Dr Zahed ur Rahman, who holds the rank of state minister, was en route to attend the 28th Meeting of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) in New Delhi. He was stopped by immigration authorities after his name was reportedly flagged during a routine security check, according to Bangladesh's BSS news agency.

Details of the Incident

While other members of the Bangladeshi delegation cleared immigration without any issues, Rahman remained stuck at the checkpoint for approximately two and a half hours. Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, M Riaz Hamidullah, who was present at the airport, identified Rahman to immigration officials. Indian authorities had been informed in advance about his role as head of the delegation.

Rahman was traveling on a normal Bangladeshi passport with a SAARC visa sticker, not a diplomatic passport, which required him to undergo regular immigration checks. Reports suggest the delay occurred because his name appeared on a security watchlist, possibly due to a technical or database error.

Decision to Return

After waiting for over two and a half hours, Rahman decided not to proceed with his scheduled visit and informed officials that he would return to Dhaka. Although Indian officials later indicated the issue could be resolved and urged him to continue, he declined and traveled via Colombo to return home.

Diplomatic Fallout

Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned India's Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe and conveyed 'deep disappointment' over the incident. Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman described the situation as 'unexpected and unfortunate' and stated that the government was taking the matter seriously.

The rest of the Bangladeshi delegation attended the IORA meeting as planned on June 15-16.
