Key Facts

The Kochi City police have intensified their investigation into an alleged human trafficking case in which seven individuals from four different states were found confined in a rented building at Cheranalloor on Friday, June 12, 2026. One suspect, Abdul Rahim, a native of Siliguri in West Bengal, was arrested on Saturday, June 13, 2026.

Details of the Case

According to police sources, the victims were brought to Kochi from Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka after being lured with promises of being flown to Canada. They were housed in a building taken on rent by Rahim, who is believed to be a key agent in a larger trafficking network. The victims had paid substantial sums of money for the promised migration.

However, the victims soon realized they had been deceived. They were reportedly made to record videos standing in front of life-size flex boards depicting Canadian locations, which had been installed inside the building. These videos were then sent to their families to make it appear that the victims had already reached Canada. When the victims confronted the agents, they were confined to the building and allegedly assaulted.

Police Investigation and Challenges

The police have encountered challenges in identifying all members of the racket, as the traffickers allegedly provided false information to the victims. An officer stated, “We are verifying the details provided by the victims.” The case is being investigated by the Cheranalloor police.

The police have not disclosed the identities of the victims. “Their identities will be protected and their safe return ensured,” the officer added.

Impact and What Readers Should Know

This case highlights the growing menace of human trafficking networks that exploit the aspirations of individuals seeking better opportunities abroad. Victims are often from economically weaker backgrounds and are tricked into paying large sums of money for fake migration promises. The police urge the public to verify the credentials of any agency or individual offering overseas placements and to report suspicious activities to the authorities.
