Key Facts

An Indian-origin man, Gagandeep Singh (34), was sentenced to 34 years in prison on Friday by Isleworth Crown Court in London for kidnapping, rape, and torture of a 24-year-old woman. The sentence includes 28 years in custody and a six-year extended licence period. He cannot be considered for parole until serving at least 18 years.

Details of the Crime

The incident occurred in June 2024. The victim was asked to deliver a suitcase containing unknown items from Thailand to the UK. Upon her refusal, she was met at Birmingham Airport by masked men, forced into a car, and driven to a house in Hanwell, west London. There, Singh subjected her to repeated rape and prolonged torture, including being punched, beaten, stripped, whipped, burnt, and raped over more than a day. She was eventually released with threats to remain silent.

Investigation and Trial

Detective Constable Seetara Abdul of the Metropolitan Police's North West Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Unit led the investigation. She stated, "The brutality of what the victim in this case faced is unimaginable." The victim initially feared reporting, but her mother's persistence—preserving clothing and medical records—led to a third-party report. Forensic examination of the clothing resulted in Singh's arrest.

Victim's Statement

The victim said, "I never wanted to contact the police... It was my mum who never gave up." She added, "To anyone who has experienced abuse... we are not the ones who should carry shame. We survive, and we go on to live again." Her mother expressed gratitude for the police's professionalism and sensitivity.

Impact and Police Response

The Metropolitan Police has strengthened training and support for victims of violence against women and girls. DC Abdul praised the victim's bravery, saying, "Her courage in the face of such awful crimes is a testament to her hugely impressive strength and resilience."
