Key facts

On June 12, 2025, Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after take-off, killing 260 people — 241 passengers and crew on board and 19 on the ground. The sole survivor, Viswashkumar Ramesh, remains severely traumatised. One year later, UK families, especially those in Leicester with strong Gujarati roots, are still seeking clarity and closure.

Community still in shock

Sanjiv Patel, a community leader and crisis management adviser based in Leicester, told PTI that the close-knit community was plunged into shock and disbelief upon hearing the news. “Throughout the year, families have been striving for closure, striving for a way to move forward, for clarity, for answers, and that's what they want,” he said. Many families continue to struggle with both mental and financial trauma, with some unable to cope with day-to-day life.

Sole survivor’s ordeal

Viswashkumar Ramesh, the only survivor, is living on Universal Credit (social benefits) and cannot leave his home without support. Patel, who has been assisting him as a family friend, described his condition as “seriously traumatised” with scars that may last forever. “The primary focus was to continue the process started in India of diagnosing and assessing him physically and psychologically,” Patel said. He added that discussions with Air India to fund those treatments are ongoing and constructive.

Demands for justice and support

Families want justice, answers, and more proactive support from the UK government and authorities. Patel urged Air India to refine how it personalises care and support. An interim statement on the crash investigation is expected, though final reports under international aviation guidelines may take longer in complex cases.
