In May 2026, the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police intensified its fight against online fraud, arresting 74 individuals and dismantling a pan-India ghost SIM network. The month also saw the removal of 251 social media profiles linked to illegal betting and fraudulent investment schemes.

Details of Enforcement Actions

According to the Cyber Crime Wing's monthly review, 54 First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered during May. Investigations led to arrests in cases spanning investment fraud, matrimonial fraud, trading fraud, OTP fraud, job fraud, social media fraud, and digital arrest scams.

A major highlight was Operation Octopus 3.0, which targeted a ghost SIM ecosystem that provided anonymous communication channels to cyber criminals. The operation resulted in the arrest of 66 persons, including ghost SIM card holders, point-of-sale agents, and suppliers, across 13 states.

Social Media Crackdown

Cyber patrol teams identified 251 social media profiles that ran 304 paid advertisements promoting online betting apps, gaming platforms, and fake investment websites. Police noted that these profiles used promises of quick profits, referral commissions, and even deepfake videos of celebrities to lure victims. All identified accounts were reported and subsequently taken down.

Officials stated that cyber patrol operations have so far led to the removal of 678 social media profiles and 2,207 paid advertisements linked to illegal betting and investment fraud.

Victim Refunds and Financial Impact

During May, victims received refunds totaling ₹68.27 lakh in 25 cyber fraud cases, despite losses exceeding ₹10 crore. Investment and trading frauds accounted for the largest share of the money lost.

The city's Zonal Cyber Cells received 2,531 complaints via the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Of these, 349 FIRs were registered, 23 accused were arrested in 18 cases, and victims received refunds of ₹25.32 lakh.

C-Mitra Initiative

The Cyber Crime Wing's C-Mitra initiative made 1,100 calls to victims and facilitated the registration of 252 Zero FIRs, ensuring timely assistance and legal action in cyber crime cases.
