Key Facts

Spain’s Federation, Chile’s Alma Films, and the Dominican Republic’s Larimar Films have joined Kryzz Gautier’s queer period horror ‘Echoes’ as co-producers. The film will be presented at the upcoming Costa Rica Media Market. Principal production is slated for late 2027, with the majority of shooting in Spain.

Details of the Film

‘Echoes’ is a queer period romance set at a colonial sugar plantation in the Dominican Republic. The story follows historian Catalina and her girlfriend Salomé, who discover an artifact that transports them to the 17th century. There, they encounter Yara, an enslaved woman, and Leonor, the governor’s daughter, engaged in a forbidden relationship. To return to their own time, Catalina and Salomé must confront their lineage and decide if their love can break the cycle of history.

Director Kryzz Gautier, a Dominican filmmaker who won the Cannes Fantastic Pavilion’s Fantastic Lab and has been recognized by Netflix as a director on the rise, wrote the script in Spanish—her first in her native language after over 15 years working in Hollywood. She previously developed projects for HBO, Sony, Universal, and others.

Impact and Significance

Gautier emphasizes the importance of setting the film in a sugar plantation, describing them as “some of the most haunted places in the Americas.” She aims to restore the emotional weight of these spaces and explore love, desire, and survival within them. The film centers queer Afro-Caribbean women, a perspective often absent in genre and period pieces. Gautier blends gothic horror and magical realism to externalize inherited trauma and colonial violence.

What Readers Should Know

‘Echoes’ is a co-production between Spain, Chile, and the Dominican Republic. Federation Spain CEO Juan Sola praised the film’s international potential. Gautier chose partners who share her vision for Latino-led stories. The film was a finalist at this year’s Fantastic Lab Central America & Caribbean.
