Key Facts

Himachal Pradesh is experiencing severe monsoon fury with continuous heavy rain and landslides over the past two days. In the last 24 hours, one person has died, five others have been injured, and 270 roads remain blocked across the state. Rivers and streams are in spate, and essential services like electricity and water supply have been disrupted.

Details of the Incident

The deceased has been identified as 70-year-old Shiv Ram, a resident of Bakhnaon and Buanda villages in Anni, Kullu district. He was walking towards Chwai on Friday afternoon when boulders suddenly rolled down from a hillside, critically injuring him. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

In Solan's Kunihar area, a landslide on the Gambarpul-Sarli road buried an Innova car, injuring five local residents. They have been admitted to a nearby hospital.

Impact on Infrastructure

Continuous rain has caused widespread damage to infrastructure:

  • Roads: 270 roads, including major highways, are closed due to landslides and debris.
  • Power: 486 electricity transformers have been knocked out, leaving many areas without power.
  • Water Supply: 50 drinking water schemes are non-functional.
  • Vehicles: Several vehicles have been damaged by falling rocks and trees.

In Shimla, heavy rain since Thursday has caused multiple landslides, disrupting normal life. In Rampur, a portion of a road was washed away due to rising water levels in the Ganvi Khad, cutting off road connectivity to the fourth panchayat of the area.

The Bharmour-Pathankot National Highway in Chamba district was blocked for four hours after a rockfall near Kharamukh. Similarly, the Mandi-Kullu National Highway saw traffic disruptions due to falling stones.

The Kalka-Shimla heritage railway track faced delays as falling rocks and debris forced trains to halt at Barog and Shoghi stations, causing inconvenience to passengers.

In Dalhousie, Chamba, a tree fell on a car carrying tourists from Haryana. Fortunately, all occupants escaped unhurt, though the vehicle was damaged.

River Levels and Dam Releases

Rivers including Ravi, Beas, Parvati, and Sutlej are flowing above danger marks. The administration has increased vigilance along riverbanks. At Jatain Barrage on the Giri River, all ten gates were opened to release water. The Pandoh Dam on the Beas River is releasing 38,000 cusecs of water. Authorities have advised people to avoid riverbanks and stay alert in landslide-prone areas.

Weather Alert and Precautions

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in six districts—Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur—for Saturday. The warning is valid until July 14, with forecasts of bad weather continuing till July 16. Schools in Solan and Sirmaur remained closed on Friday as a precaution.

The state government has directed district administrations to advise people living along rivers to move to safer locations and, if necessary, evacuate settlements. Patwaris and kanungos have been instructed to remain in their respective areas to monitor the situation.
