Mandi, Himachal Pradesh: The District Food Safety Department has reported that six out of several food samples collected in April 2026 failed quality tests. The samples included sugar, cashew nuts, urad bari, protein cubes, paneer, and milk cake. The findings were released on 23 June 2026.

Details of Failed Samples

According to the laboratory reports, sugar, cashew nuts, and urad bari were found to be misbranded. Paneer and milk cake were declared substandard as they did not meet the prescribed quality parameters. The protein cube sample was both substandard and misbranded. Notably, the sugar sample was found to contain colour adulteration, rendering it unsafe for consumption.

Inspection and Sampling

The food safety team conducted inspections and collected samples from various shops in the Padhar, Dhanotu, and Sundernagar areas of Mandi district during April 2026. In a separate drive in Sundernagar, the department also collected two samples of cooking oil from 31 bottles stored in three cartons. These samples have been sent for laboratory analysis, and action will be taken based on the results.

Action Taken

The District Food Safety Department has issued notices to the concerned traders, seeking their responses. Further proceedings will be initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act. Assistant Commissioner L.D. Thakur confirmed that legal action will be taken as per rules against those responsible for selling substandard or misbranded food items.
