Key Facts

As monsoon activity intensifies, 15 families in Kotla village under Langana panchayat in Jogindernagar, Mandi district, are once again gripped by fear. Last year, severe flooding and erosion of the Beas river had rendered their homes unsafe, but relocation remains incomplete. The families are forced to continue living in damaged houses, dreading another disaster.

Details of the Crisis

Kotla village, situated along the Beas river, witnessed massive destruction in August 2025. The river's strong currents caused land subsidence, leading to cracks in several houses and cattle sheds. The situation became so critical that the administration had to evacuate eight houses immediately. Over 20 members from 15 families were shifted to safer locations. Cattle sheds also suffered damage.

Affected residents allege that despite big promises of relief and rehabilitation after the incident, the situation remains unchanged even after a year. Many families are still living in the same damaged and unsafe houses. Meanwhile, proposed flood protection works to mitigate the threat have not been completed.

Former Langana panchayat pradhan Chandramani stated that satisfactory progress has not been made regarding rehabilitation and safety measures for the affected.

Impact on Families

Residents express deep anxiety. Rakesh Kumar, an affected resident, said, 'Last year's Beas flood endangered over ten houses. Rehabilitation is incomplete, so families are terrified this year as well.' Bhola Ram, another affected person, added, 'Relief of Rs 8 lakh was announced, but most families have received only 50% of the amount. That's why many are forced to live in unsafe houses.' Rajmal, ward member of Langana panchayat, highlighted that assistance of Rs 50-60 thousand was assured for cattle shed reconstruction, but some families got only Rs 10,000.

Administration's Response

SDM Jogindernagar Manish Chaudhary said, 'The monsoon season is here, and the administration is fully alert. Sensitive areas along the river, including Kotla village, will be inspected. Necessary safety steps will be taken as required.'
