Key Facts

BJP MP and Dalit leader Ramesh Jigajinagi has come under fire from several Dalit organisations for his recent remarks about the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In a press conference, Jigajinagi stated that Dalits should not concern themselves with RSS affairs, a comment seen as a direct response to Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge's letter to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat seeking details about the organisation's registration, finances, and compliance.

Details of the Controversy

Priyank Kharge, son of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, had written to Mohan Bhagwat requesting information on RSS's office bearers, sources of income, expenditure, assets, and tax compliance. In reaction, Jigajinagi remarked, “Those who have taken on RSS have not survived. Why should a Dalit person be concerned about RSS?” This statement has sparked outrage among Dalit groups and activists.

Dalit Leaders' Response

Gopinath Muniswamy, convener of Nava Karnataka Nirman Andolana, called Jigajinagi's comments “an insult to the whole Dalit community” and accused the BJP and RSS of using Dalit leaders to counter liberal voices. “It is very clear that Mr. Jigajinagi is doing such things only to please his ideological bosses, and to gain political mileage,” he said.

Vithaldas Pyage, a Buddhist thinker, turned the question back on Jigajinagi: “Why is a Dalit man defending the RSS? Ultimately, Mr. Kharge has only said that the RSS has to follow Constitutional morality, just like any other organisation.”

Anil Hosmani, a Vijayapura-based journalist, noted that Jigajinagi was groomed by Janata Parivar leaders like Ramakrishna Hegde. “Mr. Jigajinagi has managed to survive in the BJP only by appeasing the Sangh Parivar and by criticising senior Dalit leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge. The RSS and BJP leadership have used Mr. Jigajinagi only to defend the Hindutva political ideology,” Hosmani added.

Impact and Reactions

The controversy highlights the ongoing tensions between Dalit leaders aligned with the BJP and those critical of the RSS. Organisations such as the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti, Bhim Army, and Sangolli Rayanna Yuva Sene have issued statements condemning Jigajinagi's remarks. The incident also underscores the broader debate about the RSS's role in Indian politics and its relationship with Dalit communities.
