Key Facts

Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the University of Calcutta have identified a new species of lynx spider in Meghalaya. Named Hamataliwa mawlyngot, the spider was discovered in Mawlyngot village, located in the East Khasi Hills district. The findings were published in the journal National Academy Science Letters on June 17, 2026.

Details of the Discovery

The research team, comprising Souvik Sen, Upasana Bhattacharya, and Puthoor Pattammal Sudhin, collected both male and female specimens from Molucca brambles growing on the slopes of the Khasi Hills. The spider is no larger than a fingernail and was found concealed among dense foliage, which likely explains why it remained unnoticed despite its accessible habitat.

Significance for Biodiversity

This discovery marks the first record of the genus Hamataliwa in Meghalaya and helps bridge a crucial gap in the group's known distribution across Asia. Previously, Hamataliwa species had been documented only in parts of southern India, China, and Southeast Asia. The finding provides valuable insights for scientists studying species distribution patterns in the region.

Ecological Role and Behavior

Unlike web-building spiders, lynx spiders are active hunters. They rely on sharp eyesight, speed, and agility to stalk and ambush insects among leaves and shrubs. This hunting behavior has earned them their feline-inspired name. Ecologically, they play an important role as natural biological control agents, helping regulate insect pest populations and reducing the need for chemical pesticides in agricultural landscapes.

What Readers Should Know

  • The new species is named after Mawlyngot village, known for its tea plantations and dense vegetation.
  • The discovery highlights the vast, yet undocumented biodiversity of Meghalaya's Khasi Hills.
  • Lynx spiders are beneficial for agriculture as they prey on pest insects.
