Key Facts

The Karnataka Energy Department is planning to make voter ID mandatory for those reapplying under the Gruha Jyothi scheme. The move aims to restrict benefits to genuine Karnataka voters and curb misuse by non-residents.

Details of the Proposal

Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that beneficiaries must reapply for the scheme. The department now proposes linking voter ID along with Aadhaar and RR number (electricity meter ID). A senior official stated, 'There are many people from other states who have voting rights elsewhere but stay in Karnataka and avail the scheme. We will check if they are Karnataka voters.'

Impact on Beneficiaries

Currently, 1.67 crore people benefit from Gruha Jyothi. The government has released subsidies of ₹5,830 crore (2022-23), ₹9,158 crore (2024-25), ₹10,260 crore (2025-26), and ₹1,762 crore (2026-27 till May). Officials hope to save ₹200 crore annually by eliminating ineligible beneficiaries.

Concerns Raised by Citizens

Some residents fear losing benefits. A Banashankari resident said, 'I vote using Aadhaar, not voter ID. Will I lose benefits?' Another from R.T. Nagar added, 'My voter ID is in Mysuru, but I live in Bengaluru. My wife doesn't have a voter ID. We may end up paying more.'

What Readers Should Know

  • Beneficiaries must have a voter ID registered in Karnataka; voting history is irrelevant.
  • The scheme provides free electricity up to 200 units per month.
  • Smart cards with beneficiary details (RR number, Aadhaar, voter ID) are also planned.
  • Guidelines for shifting houses are yet to be framed.
