Key Facts
The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct the NEET UG re-examination on June 21, 2026, following the cancellation of the May 3 exam due to a paper leak. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the leak. In response, the Centre has announced stringent security protocols, including involvement of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to transport question papers.
Annamalai's Concerns
K Annamalai, former president of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit, took to X to criticise the security arrangements. He listed measures such as 'Two-tier CRPF CISF escort with IAF airlift, 4-layer CCTV with AI surveillance, biometric & facial recognition before entry, multiple layers of frisking, and multi-level oversight with direct monitoring from the prime minister's office.' He remarked that these seemed more fitting for 'high-level, classified, military-grade software' than for a medical entrance exam.
Annamalai argued that while students appreciate efforts to prevent paper leaks, the added security for a three-hour exam only increases the 'already ballooning exam pressure.' He stated, 'While the government has taken measures to contain leaks, they have forgotten the additional burden they have imposed on a young student... dissolving the entire purpose of our exam system and the NEP 2020’s goal to reduce Exam Stress.' He also flagged issues candidates face in downloading admit cards for the re-test.
BJP's Response
In response, Vinoj P Selvam, state secretary of BJP's Tamil Nadu unit, defended the measures by citing China's Gaokao exam, taken by over 13 million students annually under strict protocols. He wrote, 'Nobody calls it militarisation, they call it protecting merit.' He added that students deserve confidence in the system, and the NEET measures aim to reflect that.
Impact on Students
The debate highlights the tension between ensuring exam integrity and managing student stress. While security is necessary to prevent leaks, critics argue that excessive measures can be intimidating and counterproductive. The NEET re-test will be a litmus test for the government's approach to high-stakes examinations.
