Wall Street ended Friday, 6 November 2026, on a mixed note. Technology stocks rebounded from Thursday’s heavy sell-off, but a much stronger than expected US jobs report raised the chances of a December interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve, which kept the Dow under pressure.

  • Nasdaq Composite: 24,579.42, up 264.43 points or 1.09 percent.
  • S&P 500: 7,376.86, up 23.13 points or 0.31 percent.
  • Dow Jones Industrial Average: 51,285.73, down 237.33 points or 0.46 percent.
  • Russell 2000: 2,754.11, up 0.89 percent.
  • VIX volatility index: 25.58, down 9.23 percent.
  • Gold: 4,074 dollars an ounce, down 0.96 percent.
  • WTI crude oil: 90.43 dollars a barrel, down 0.10 percent.

A bruising week

Despite Friday’s partial recovery, all three main benchmarks recorded weekly losses. The Nasdaq fell 3.4 percent for the week, the S&P 500 fell 2.7 percent and the Dow fell 0.9 percent. It was the S&P 500’s worst week since June.

Thursday had been the market’s worst day since April 2025. The S&P 500 fell 4.36 percent to 7,353.73 and the Nasdaq slid 5.5 percent, entering correction territory and finishing at its lowest level in seven months.

The jobs report that changed the rate outlook

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Friday morning that nonfarm payrolls rose by 165,000 in October, far above the consensus expectation of about 65,000. The unemployment rate dipped to 4.1 percent from 4.2 percent.

September’s jobs figure was revised up from 29,000 to 60,000 and August’s was revised up from 133,000 to 186,000, adding a combined 84,000 jobs to the two earlier months.

The strong report pushed Treasury yields higher. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to about 4.85 to 4.86 percent, up from 4.84 percent at Thursday’s close. Market pricing for a Federal Reserve rate increase in December rose to about 78 percent. The president of the San Francisco Federal Reserve said after the report that the central bank will probably have to tighten further.

Chip stocks led the rebound

Chip stocks recovered part of Thursday’s rout. AMD rose 11.04 percent, Intel rose 7.71 percent, Micron rose 5.12 percent and Nvidia rose 2.78 percent to 186.64 dollars. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose about 4.2 percent.
