India has announced an extension of a USD 500 million Line of Credit to Guyana for roads, health and defence projects. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced it on 5 November 2026 after meeting Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda.

What was agreed

  • USD 500 million Line of Credit extended for roads, health and defence projects
  • Three agreements signed: supply and installation of micro and small enterprise (MSE) manufacturing projects, grant assistance for Quick Impact Projects, and cooperation in Digital Public Infrastructure
  • The two sides will also work on a UPI-like payment system in Guyana

Why it matters

The two leaders reviewed the progress in bilateral ties since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Guyana in November 2024 — the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 56 years. The credit line fulfils a commitment made during that visit and deepens India’s partnership with the Caribbean nation.
