Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said India is targeting $1 trillion in exports in the current financial year, after exports grew 14% to $480 billion in the first six months (April–September 2026).

The numbers

  • Last year’s exports: $863 billion — India’s highest ever
  • April–September 2026: $480 billion, up 14% year-on-year
  • Still needed: $520 billion in the remaining six months to reach $1 trillion
  • The $1 trillion target represents about 16% growth over last year — far above the IMF’s original global trade growth projection of 1.9%, since revised to about 3.5%

What Goyal said

Speaking at the Young Leaders Discourse Forum at Kirori Mal College, New Delhi, on 3 November 2026, Goyal said India could have set a safer $900 billion target (about 5% growth) but chose the more ambitious $1 trillion goal. He added that October had also been a good month for exports, with official October figures due in mid-November.
