Dalhousie is a quiet colonial hill station in Chamba district, at about 2,036 m on five hills, with pine and deodar forests and views of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges. The British built it in 1854 as a summer retreat. November is one of the best months to visit — clear skies, autumn colours, fewer crowds and lower hotel rates.

The best time to visit Dalhousie and Khajjiar is March to June and October to November. Khajjiar gets snow in January and February, and the road may close for a day or two then.

Khajjiar — the Mini Switzerland

Khajjiar is about 22–24 km from Dalhousie, roughly an hour by road. It is a wide, flat meadow ringed by thick deodar forest, with a small lake at its centre and the Khajji Nag temple at its edge. It is called the “Mini Switzerland of India”. Give it a full day, not a quick photo stop.

Reported activity ranges around Khajjiar are ₹1,500–₹3,000 for paragliding and ₹300–₹800 for horse rides — confirm the actual venue, provider and current charge before paying.

Places to visit

  • Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, about 10–13 km: a forest walk on the way to Khajjiar, with barking deer, langur, Himalayan black bear and birds. A forest-department entry fee applies for entry and vehicles — check the current rates locally.
  • Panchpula: waterfalls and the memorial of freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh, about 3 km from town.
  • Subhash Baoli: the spring where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose stayed in 1937.
  • Dainkund Peak, about 10 km: the highest local viewpoint at 2,755 m, with a small Pholani Devi temple at the top. The walk from Lakkadmandi takes about 30 to 40 minutes.
  • Chamba, about 50–55 km: the temple town on the Ravi, with the Laxmi Narayan temples, the Bhuri Singh Museum and the Chaugan.
  • Chamera Lake, about 25 km: boating on the Ravi reservoir.
