Banks across India will stay shut on several days in November 2026, and the Diwali week is the busiest stretch. Diwali itself falls on Sunday, 8 November, so banks are already closed that day — but banks in many states will also stay shut on Monday 9, Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 November for the Diwali festivities. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) publishes the holiday list state by state under the Negotiable Instruments Act, so the exact closures differ by where your branch is.

Diwali week: 8 to 11 November

  • Sunday, 8 November — Diwali / Lakshmi Puja: banks closed across India, because it is a Sunday.
  • Monday, 9 November — Deepavali / Govardhan Puja / Vishwakarma Day: banks closed in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Tripura, Manipur and Chandigarh.
  • Tuesday, 10 November — Bali Pratipada / Vikram Samvat New Year: banks closed in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Sikkim.
  • Wednesday, 11 November — Bhai Dooj / Bhratridwitiya: banks closed in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Manipur and West Bengal.

The state lists above combine the RBI holiday calendar as reported by more than one source, and the lists do differ slightly between sources. The RBI publishes holidays by regional office city, not by state, so branches in other cities of the same state usually follow the same list — but confirm with your own branch before you go, especially if you need to deposit a cheque or collect a demand draft.

The rest of November 2026

  • Saturday, 14 November — Second Saturday: banks closed across India. It is also the Wangala Festival in Meghalaya.
  • Sunday, 15 November — Chhath Puja: banks closed across India for Sunday; Chhath is a holiday in Bihar and Jharkhand.
  • Monday, 16 November — Chhath Puja: banks closed in Bihar and Jharkhand.
  • Sundays, 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 November: banks closed across India.
  • Tuesday, 24 November — Guru Nanak Jayanti / Kartika Purnima: the most widespread bank holiday of the month, with banks closed in most states, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Saturday, 28 November — Fourth Saturday: banks closed across India.

In total, the RBI calendar lists 14 holiday dates in November, counting the Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays. Depending on your state, banks will be shut for 7 to 10 days this month.

What this means for you

  • Plan branch visits early: if you need a branch service — a cheque deposit, a locker visit, a demand draft, a KYC update — finish it before the Diwali week, or wait until Thursday, 12 November, when banks reopen in most states.
  • Digital banking keeps working: UPI, net banking, mobile banking apps and ATMs are not affected by branch holidays. You can still transfer money, pay bills and withdraw cash on every holiday.
  • Cheques and settlements slow down: cheques deposited just before a holiday will take longer to clear, because clearing houses also follow the holiday calendar.
  • Himachal Pradesh: banks in Himachal are closed on Wednesday, 11 November for Bhai Dooj and on Tuesday, 24 November for Guru Nanak Jayanti. Diwali on Sunday, 8 November is already a weekly off.
