Nayara Energy has commissioned a major upgrade at its Vadinar refinery in Gujarat, so that 100% of its diesel production now continuously meets BS-VI emission standards — India’s cleanest fuel norms.
What was upgraded
- The project is a revamp of the VGO-MHC (Vacuum Gasoil Mild Hydrocracker) unit, commissioned on 5 November 2026
- It extends the unit’s operating cycle by more than 150%, meaning much longer periods between planned maintenance shutdowns and steadier fuel supply
- The upgrade improves efficiency and crude processing flexibility, raising the refinery’s Nelson Complexity Index to 12.6
- The work included installing a 1,435-tonne reactor inside a live, operating refinery
Why it matters
- The Vadinar refinery has a capacity of 20 million tonnes per annum and is India’s second-largest single-site refinery
- The upgrade strengthens the refinery’s ability to reliably produce cleaner fuels and support India’s growing energy needs
- Nayara Energy is backed by Rosneft and operates as an integrated downstream energy and petrochemicals company
