Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing down the curtain on a 14-year career that made him one of the most feared white-ball players in the world.

The announcement

  • Maxwell, 38, announced the decision on 2 November 2026 on The Final Word podcast
  • He is also stepping away from domestic 50-over and four-day red-ball cricket for Victoria
  • He will continue playing in T20 leagues, including for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League
  • Maxwell said he needs to manage his body carefully to prolong his career in franchise cricket

A career in numbers

  • 7 Tests, 149 ODIs and 130 T20Is for Australia — 286 international matches in all
  • 3,990 ODI runs at an average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 126.7, with four hundreds
  • 2,897 T20I runs at a strike rate of 154.4
  • 339 Test runs and 136 international wickets
  • 10 international centuries across formats
  • Part of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cup winning teams and the 2021 T20 World Cup winning team

The innings everyone remembers

Maxwell’s most famous knock was his unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 ODI World Cup in Mumbai — a double hundred scored while battling severe cramps, chasing down 292 almost single-handedly after Australia had collapsed to 91 for 7. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest one-day innings ever played.

The road to retirement

Maxwell had already retired from ODI cricket in June 2025, with his last match in the format coming against India in the Champions Trophy semi-final. His final international appearance was against Oman at the T20 World Cup in February 2026. Cricket Australia left him out of its central contract list for the 2026–27 season in April 2026.
