The government is considering a new umbrella category — advanced electrified vehicles (AEVs) — for passenger cars with large batteries, as it moves beyond pure electric vehicles toward a multi-powertrain approach to green mobility.
What is being proposed
- AEVs would cover electric vehicles (EVs), range-extended EVs (REEVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs) under one category
- The qualifying bar: a battery of at least 15 kWh that can run meaningfully on electric power in large cities, with off-board charging
- The idea followed the notification of CAFE-III fuel efficiency norms on 29 September 2026, which recognise REEVs and PHEVs but are not clearly defined in the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989
- Government sources say an inter-ministerial exercise will follow after consultations with the industry
Important: a proposal, not a rule yet
Nothing has been notified. The category is still under consideration, and the final definitions will be aligned with CAFE-III after industry consultations.
