Most Indians keep their money in a savings account earning 2.50% — and with inflation running at 5% to 6%, that money loses purchasing power every year. But in November 2026, some banks pay more than twice that. The highest effective savings rate in the country is 6.35%, from a small finance bank, while the biggest banks — SBI and HDFC — pay 2.50% on all balances. Here is the full picture, and the catch behind the headline rates.
The best savings rates in November 2026
These are effective rates for November 2026, compiled from the banks’ own websites:
- Unity Small Finance Bank: 6.35%
- Equitas Small Finance Bank: 6.05%
- IDFC FIRST Bank: 5.65%
- Slice Small Finance Bank: 5.50%
- ESAF Small Finance Bank: 4.80%
- DBS Bank: 4.50%
- Post Office savings account: 4.00%
- State Bank of India: 2.50%
- HDFC Bank: 2.50%
- Bank of India: 2.50%
- Central Bank of India: 2.50%
- Yes Bank: 2.50%
- HSBC: 2.00%
The pattern is clear: the best rates come from small finance banks, while the big public-sector and private banks pay a flat 2.50% after their last cuts in mid-2025.
The catch: rates are slab-based
The headline rate is almost never the rate on your whole balance. Banks pay different rates on different balance slabs, so match the slab to your balance, not the advertisement:
- Equitas Small Finance Bank pays 7.00% on the Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh slab, and lower rates on smaller and larger balances.
- IDFC FIRST Bank pays 6.50% on balances above Rs 3 lakh, and 2.50% on balances up to Rs 3 lakh.
- AU Small Finance Bank pays 6.50% only on balances above Rs 10 lakh.
- A zero-balance account at SBI, Kotak 811 or AU pays 2.50% on small balances.
That is why the “effective rate” matters more than the banner rate: it is the blended rate your actual balance earns.
How much the difference is worth
On Rs 5 lakh, the difference between 2.50% and 6.50% is Rs 20,000 a year:
- At 2.50% (SBI, HDFC): Rs 12,500 interest in a year
- At 6.50% (IDFC FIRST above Rs 3 lakh, Equitas on the Rs 1–5 lakh slab): Rs 32,500 interest in a year
On Rs 1 lakh, the same gap is Rs 4,000 a year. Over five years, the gap on Rs 5 lakh is Rs 1 lakh — real money, for the same deposit.
Is your money safe in a small finance bank?
Yes, up to a limit. Deposits in every scheduled bank in India — including small finance banks — are insured by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor per bank, covering both principal and interest. So up to Rs 5 lakh in any one bank is protected even if the bank fails. Above Rs 5 lakh, spread the money across banks, or prefer a larger, stronger bank.
Two cautions are worth knowing. First, small finance banks revise their rates every quarter — usually in March, June, September and December — so a rate that is best today may not be best in January. Second, one high-rate bank, Unity Small Finance Bank, was downgraded to A- by rating agency ICRA in July 2026, so do not park more than the insured Rs 5 lakh there.
What to do
- Check your current rate: if your salary account at a big bank pays 2.50%, you are leaving money on the table.
- Match the slab: if you usually keep Rs 1–5 lakh, Equitas’s 7.00% slab fits; if you keep more than Rs 3 lakh, IDFC FIRST’s 6.50% slab fits.
- Keep it simple: one high-rate account for your savings, plus your existing salary account for daily spending, is enough for most people.
- Check the bank’s own website before opening: rates change often, and aggregator tables can be weeks out of date.
