More than 65 lakh households have now joined the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar scheme, and the pace has quickened to about one lakh new rooftop solar installations every six days. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on 4 November 2026 that the scheme has become a mass movement.
Joshi was speaking at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi. He said the time taken to complete one lakh installations has fallen from 44 days in the early stages of the scheme to just six days now, and he expects it to speed up further to one lakh every four to five days within the next two to three weeks.
The target
The scheme aims to put rooftop solar in one crore households by 31 March 2027, with an interim target of 75 lakh households by December 2026. It was launched in February 2024 with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, inaugurating the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 on 2 November, said more than 65 lakh households have joined the scheme within about two years of its launch, and the pace works out to one lakh new homes every six days.
What households get
- Central subsidy of ₹30,000 for a 1 kW system, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and ₹78,000 for 3 kW or more
- Up to 300 units of free electricity per month
- Savings of about ₹15,000 per household per year on electricity bills
- Extra income by selling surplus electricity back to the grid
Households apply at pmsuryaghar.gov.in, and the subsidy is credited directly to the bank account.
India’s solar growth
Joshi also pointed to India’s wider solar growth: installed solar capacity has risen from about 3 GW in 2014 to 172 GW in 2026. The government expects the scheme to save about ₹75,000 crore a year in electricity costs once it reaches full scale.
The minister said he was confident the scheme would meet its one crore target by 31 March 2027.
