Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck in 2027, chief executive Elon Musk announced on X this week. The company will wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas gigafactory by mid-2027 and use the factory space to build more of its two-seater Cybercab robotaxi.
The announcement was covered by TechCrunch, Forbes, CBS News, USA Today and MarketWatch.
What Musk announced
- Cybertruck production at the Texas gigafactory will wind down by mid-2027.
- The freed-up factory space will be used to increase production of the Cybercab, Tesla’s two-seater robotaxi.
- The Cybercab is the driverless taxi Tesla is betting its future on, instead of the angular electric pickup truck.
Why it matters
The Cybertruck was Tesla’s most distinctive vehicle, but the company is now shifting its focus to self-driving taxis. The Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals and is designed to carry two passengers. By ending Cybertruck production, Tesla is freeing factory capacity for the vehicle it expects to produce in much larger numbers.
Tesla has not said what will happen to Cybertruck orders already placed, or whether the truck will return in a different form later.
