An IRA is a retirement savings account in the USA, and the two most common types are Roth IRA and Traditional IRA. The main difference is when you pay tax on the money.
Traditional IRA — tax break now, tax later
With a Traditional IRA, you may get a tax deduction when you put money in, so you pay less tax now. The money grows without tax each year, but you pay income tax when you take it out in retirement.
It can suit you if you think your tax rate will be lower in retirement than it is now.
Roth IRA — tax now, no tax later
With a Roth IRA, you put in money you have already paid tax on, so there is no tax deduction now. The money grows tax-free, and you can take it out tax-free in retirement if you follow the rules.
It can suit you if you think your tax rate will be higher in retirement, or if you are young and in a lower tax bracket now.
Key differences at a glance
- Tax now: Traditional may reduce your tax now; Roth does not.
- Tax in retirement: Traditional withdrawals are taxed; qualified Roth withdrawals are tax-free.
- Income limits: Roth IRA has income limits for direct contributions; Traditional IRA does not have the same income limit for contributing, though the deduction may be limited.
- Required withdrawals: Traditional IRA has required minimum distributions in retirement; Roth IRA does not require them for the original owner.
There is no one “better” choice for everyone. Many people use a mix of both over time. The best choice depends on your income now, your expected income in retirement, and your tax situation.
This is general education only, not financial advice. IRA rules and limits change, so check the current IRS rules or a tax professional before deciding.
