The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027, released on 3 November 2026, has no Indian university in the top 50 for the second year running. IIT Delhi, India’s best-ranked, fell from 59 to 66.

The Indian picture

  • IIT Delhi: 59 → 66 — still India’s highest-ranked university
  • IISc Bengaluru: 64 → 79
  • IIT Bombay: 71 → 83
  • IIT Madras: 85, IIT Kharagpur: 90, IIT Kanpur: 97
  • Only 6 Indian institutions in the top 100, down from 7 last year
  • Delhi University fell 95 → 106
  • India has 325 institutions ranked, up from 294 — the second-most in Asia after China (448)

The top of the table

The top three are the University of Hong Kong, Peking University and Tsinghua University. The rankings cover 1,722 universities, including 195 new entrants. QS says the Indian falls mainly reflect tougher competition, not a drop in quality.
