OpenAI announced on 4 November 2026 that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc., a developer-tools startup whose technology already runs inside Codex, its AI coding agent. The deal will bring Pierre’s Code Storage product into Codex.

Code Storage is hosted Git infrastructure built for AI apps and agents — it stores code repositories and their history through Git, with APIs and SDKs designed for machines rather than people browsing a host. OpenAI plans to integrate it into Codex so the agent can store and manage the repositories, branches and changes it produces.

What is already in Codex

Pierre’s open-source libraries, Diffs and Trees, already power file browsing and code-diff display in the Codex app. OpenAI says those projects will remain open source and that it will keep contributing to them. Existing Code Storage customers can continue using the service after the deal closes.

What has not happened yet

The acquisition has not closed. It is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and the two companies will operate independently until it closes. No closing date has been announced, and no purchase price has been disclosed. OpenAI has not announced a new repository hosting product, a migration deadline or any change to Codex subscriptions.

The deal does not mean Codex will replace GitHub — OpenAI has not said that.

Why OpenAI wants it

Two days earlier, on 2 November 2026, OpenAI described Pando, its own Git backend that powers development in its monorepo. OpenAI said switching to Pando cut median push latency by nearly 80%. Codex’s parallel-agent use has driven more branches, pushes and merges, and Pierre’s storage is aimed at that same machine-scale workload.

Pierre was founded by Jacob Thornton, a co-creator of the Bootstrap front-end framework, and Ian Ownbey, an early Twitter engineer. It raised a $22 million Series A led by CRV and 01A in November 2025.
