India finished the Asian Para Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with a record 114 medals — 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze — the country’s best-ever performance at the Games. India finished fourth in the medal table, behind China, Japan and Uzbekistan.

The Games ran from 18 to 24 October 2026, and the closing ceremony was held on Saturday, 24 October, at Paloma Mizuho Stadium. Double gold medallist para-shooter Mona Agarwal and athlete Nishad Kumar led the Indian contingent as co-flag-bearers at the ceremony.

Beating the previous best

India’s previous best was 108 medals (27 gold) at Hangzhou 2023 — a figure that itself came after three medals were later revoked following doping violations. The 2026 haul of 114 medals is three more than that, and the gold count rose from 27 to 30.

What makes the achievement bigger is the size of the team. India sent only 168 athletes to Japan, compared with 309 at Hangzhou. 97 of the 168 won medals. The team also set 5 world records and 9 Asian records, and recorded 4 podium sweeps.

Para-athletics supplied 65 of the 114 medals. Javelin thrower Sumit Antil defended his gold medal, and sprinter Simran Sharma won gold in both the women’s 100m and 200m T12 events, setting Games records in both.

PM Modi meets the contingent

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the contingent at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi on 5 November at about 4:30 PM, congratulating the athletes on the record haul.

The performance is the second consecutive time India has crossed 100 medals at the Asian Para Games, confirming that the country’s para-sport programme is now producing results at scale, not just in one or two events.
