The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 will be held on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. The exam is organised this year by IIT Madras, and the official website is gate2027.iitm.ac.in. Registration has already closed, so this is the guide for candidates who applied: when the admit card comes, how the exam runs, and what happens after.
GATE 2027: the full schedule
- Organising institute: IIT Madras
- Official website: gate2027.iitm.ac.in (GOAPS portal for applications and admit cards)
- Information brochure released: 20 July 2026
- Registration opened: 27 August 2026 through the GOAPS portal
- Registration closed: late September 2026 (the regular window is over; no new applications are being accepted)
- City intimation slip: 4 January 2027 (tells you only the exam city, not the centre)
- Admit card: January 2027, downloaded from the GOAPS portal with your enrolment ID and password
- Exam dates: 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 — six days spread over three weekends
- Answer key: expected around 27 February 2027
- Result: 19 March 2027
The admit card date is given as “January 2027” by the organising institute, with different guides expecting it in the first week of January. Do not trust screenshots or Telegram forwards claiming an exact date — check the notice board on gate2027.iitm.ac.in itself.
How the exam runs
GATE 2027 is a computer-based test (CBT) held in two sessions each exam day:
- Forenoon session: 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM
- Afternoon session: 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM
Each candidate’s paper, date and session are printed on the admit card. There are 29 papers in GATE, covering engineering branches, sciences and humanities subjects. You must carry a printed copy of the admit card and a valid photo ID to the exam centre — without the admit card, you will not be allowed to sit the exam.
Who GATE 2027 is for
GATE is the entrance test for MTech and ME admissions in the IITs, NITs and other institutes, and many public sector companies (PSUs) also use GATE scores for recruitment. Final-year students and graduates in engineering, technology, architecture and science are eligible, and there is no age limit. The score is valid for three years for admissions.
If you registered this year, your next steps are simple: download the city intimation slip on 4 January 2027 to know your exam city, then download the admit card when it is released in January and check your paper, date, session and centre carefully. Report any error in your name, photo or paper to the GATE office through the GOAPS portal immediately — do not wait until exam week.
What to do in the remaining months
- Revise, do not start new topics: with the exam in February, the highest return comes from mock tests, previous-year papers and short notes, not from new chapters.
- Practise the calculator: GATE is a computer-based test with an on-screen virtual calculator. Practise with it, because the real calculator feels slower than a physical one.
- Keep your documents ready: your enrolment ID, password, a printed admit card and a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, passport or driving licence).
- Check the official site weekly: GATE schedules have changed before — even this year’s registration start date was revised once. The official portal is the only reliable source.
