Foreign investors bought a net $1.6 billion of Indian equities on Thursday, 5 November 2026 — their biggest single-day purchase in nearly six years, according to provisional exchange data cited by Reuters.
Overseas investors bought ₹147.96 billion (about ₹14,974.68 crore) of shares. It was the largest single-day net purchase since 24 February 2021, when purchases of ₹287.39 billion included a large promoter-driven block deal.
A sharp reversal after record selling
The buying marks a sharp reversal. Foreign investors sold a record $30 billion of Indian equities through October 2026. They have now bought a net about $2.2 billion of Indian stocks over the past five sessions.
The return of foreign money came as oil prices fell sharply and as investors rotated out of AI-linked shares globally, bringing Indian equities back into focus after months in which capital chased the AI trade.
Markets and the rupee
The Nifty 50 and the Sensex jumped 2.4% on Thursday — the Nifty to 24,536.60 and the Sensex up 2,008.61 points (2.6%) to 79,310.01. It was their best session in seven months and their sixth straight winning session.
The rupee gained about 0.5% during the week, touching a two-week high of 94.32 during Thursday’s session before settling at 94.4750. It opened on Friday, 6 November, at 94.49 against the US dollar.
Domestic institutional investors were net sellers of ₹10,444.54 crore on Thursday. GIFT Nifty futures were at 24,460 at 7:49 AM IST on Friday, pointing to a weaker open for the benchmark Nifty.
The FII return is not a guarantee that markets will keep rising — the buying is provisional data, and a single day of inflows does not make a trend.
