If you have more than one debt, two popular payoff methods in the USA are the snowball and the avalanche. Both work — the difference is which debt you attack first.
The snowball method — smallest balance first
With the snowball, you list your debts from smallest balance to largest, pay the minimum on all of them, and put every extra dollar toward the smallest one. When it is gone, you move to the next smallest.
It gives you quick wins. Paying off a whole debt fast keeps you motivated, even if it is not the cheapest way in pure interest.
The avalanche method — highest interest first
With the avalanche, you list your debts from highest interest rate to lowest, pay the minimum on all of them, and put every extra dollar toward the highest-rate debt. When it is gone, you move to the next highest rate.
It saves you the most money in interest and usually pays off debt faster overall — but the first win can take longer, because the highest-rate debt is often a large one.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose snowball if: you need motivation and quick wins to stay on track, or your debts are small.
- Choose avalanche if: you want to save the most money and you can stay disciplined without a quick win.
- Either is better than neither: the method that you will actually stick with is the right one for you.
Whichever you choose, stop adding new debt while you pay it off, pay more than the minimum when you can, and keep an emergency fund so a surprise bill does not push you back into debt.
