Auto loan rates in the USA vary a lot by credit score. The figures below are from Experian’s Q2 2026 data on funded loans — the average rate a borrower actually got.

Average rates by credit tier

  • Super prime (781–850): 4.41% new / 6.29% used
  • Prime (661–780): 6.15% new / 8.81% used
  • Near prime (601–660): 9.71% new / 13.93% used
  • Subprime (501–600): 13.52% new / 19.10% used
  • Deep subprime (below 500): 16.11% new / 21.62% used

Overall averages: 6.35% for new cars and 11.19% for used cars.

What a typical loan looks like

  • New car: average loan $43,610 at $765/month over about 69 months
  • Used car: average loan $27,852 at $542/month
  • Average new vehicle price: $50,562 (September 2026)

A new rule to know

Interest on loans for new US-assembled vehicles may be deductible up to $10,000 per year (2025–2028) — a new rule; check current IRS guidance before relying on it.

Why averages differ

Other sources report slightly different averages (Edmunds Q3 2026 says 7.0% new / 10.6% used; Bankrate’s survey is about 7.06% for a 60-month new-car loan). Rates depend on the lender, the term, and your credit score — so treat any single “average” as a guide, not a quote.
